As an entrepreneur, I have come into contact with a lot of business leaders, most of them successful. And while talking to them, I have noticed a pattern in their development scheme and failures. As a result, I came up with a list of tips that will make you a better leader.
First of all, admit that you don’t know the answer to everything. Not admitting mistakes or the lack of knowledge gave some people a sense of superiority and pride. Leadership is different. You must reveal yourself as a human being. Your team will be more receptive and willing to help you.
Secondly, give more positive feedback and cut down on criticism. We live in a competitive world, we work in competitive environment, we are bombarded with tasks. Every employee needs a dose of positivity and recognition, especially in a young firm. Know that every “win” counts, no matter how small it is.
Hire for potential and fire for negligence. Study your resumes thoroughly and keep track of what your people are doing. Do not limit yourself on a list of skills listed on a sheet of paper, try to find the potential of every person you are interviewing.
Do not rush with promoting people. Try to mentor your employee before promoting him, to see if he is ready to take extra responsibilities.
Do not obsess over budget! Focus more on the goals at hand. Try to see your employees not as monetary value, but as individuals, with creative ideas and growing potential.
And finally, share something personal with your team. You don’t need to become too personal. Just mention a recent vacation, or one or two things about your kids. Your team members need to know you are human too. Let them know there is life outside of work.
