How to Work on Your Workaholic Addiction


Hi, my name is *insert here* and I’m a workaholic.

How do you know you’re a workaholic? If you spend long hours in front of your computer or with work-related paperwork or banging your head against the wall trying to figure out ways of developing your company, you’re probably a workaholic.

Instead of spending your free time with your spouse, husband, friends and family and paying attention to what he,she or they have to say you start to sneak some peeks at your phone, then you’re probably in trouble. Here are a few symptoms, so pay attention.

Are you the type of person that cannot help yourself from working from vacation?

Does it happen on a regular basis that during dinner “it just so happens” you start to check your emails or your phone?

Do you do everything within your powers to ensure you always squeeze that last phone call before you leave from work?

Don’t fret, you’re not the only one that’s in an unhealthy addictive relationship with your work. So many entrepreneurs are used to work long hours that it has become as ordinary as a thing you do on a regular basis.

Don’t get me wrong, working hard is awesome, but only to a certain extent. Doing overtime will not aid you productivity-wise. Actually, it’s quite harmful. You need to create a balance between your work and your spare time. If you don’t know how to do that, here are some tips that will aid you cure your workaholic addiction.

1.Once it’s shut, keep it shut

Learn how to do that by making a pact with yourself, constantly reminding you that past a certain time you will refuse to do any time of work. Also, never break protocol and learn when to just walk away.

2.You deserve a break once in a while

Also, take several breaks during the workday, even if they’re small ones. Decide to go out for lunch instead of eating your dish at your work desk. Take short strolls around the office or even go to a nearby park for a change of scenery. 10 minutes spent away from the office can make a greater impact and difference than you might be inclined to think.

3.Shift your mindset

A common misconception among workaholics is that the longer work hours you put in, the more work ethic you will demonstrate to your peers, whereas the people who take breaks or prefer to spend their evenings, weekends or even holidays disconnected are perceived as lazy, sloppy or less committed. However, that mindset is not only inaccurate, but also unhealthy. Therefore, just kick back and relax when you feel like you deserve it. And don’t forget, what you think is what you are.

4.Don’t consider it a joke

When you feel burned out from work and act like your life cannot continue without your job, you’re probably damaging your health and personal relationships beyond belief. You should seriously consider taking change. If necessary, take into account getting the proper help to learn and apply better skills that will aid you in your pursuit to find a balance in your life.

5.Work should be done in the office and it should stay in the office

This is the hardest there is. When you get home, just turn off the phone and logout from your e-mail account. Rather, use that time and spend it with friends and family. Maybe it’s time you are the person who is unreachable for work, at least for a while. And if you’re not in the field of saving lives, it’s perfectly normal.

6.Meditate on it

Workaholics, more than most people need to figure out how to remove their thinking mind. Meditation is an awesome way of ensuring that happens. Just take some time every day and start to consciously slow down, take a deep breath, relax and put your mind to rest.

7.Establish healthy boundaries

People that show a tendency to become workaholics also find it difficult when they have to set and maintain boundaries. For starters, create a work schedule and don’t stray from it. It’s okay if once in a blue moon you’ll have to put in some late evenings or weekend hours. However, do it intentionally, based on schedules and patterns and not only because you’re still at work late at night and you’re not running on fumes.

Adopting a workaholic lifestyle will not benefit anyone, whether it’s you, your team, friends and family, or the rest of the world.

By steering clear of the workaholic addiction you will be more effective and happy. Also you’ll be able to enjoy a better sleep, breaks and the free time you have to forge relationships outside of the office.
